2-01 Top Five Myths about the Vatican

Movies, novels and the Internet have taught us to think of the Vatican as ultra-controlled, ultra-secretive, ultra-wealthy and rife with careerism. Discover the reality behind these stereotypes as a way of closing the "cultural gap" between Rome and America.

John L. Allen Jr.

John Allen Jr. is the Vatican correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and a Vatican analyst for CNN. He lectures widely on Vatican affairs and has written a soon-to-be-released book entitled "All the Pope’s Men: A Guide to the Psychology and Culture of the Vatican."

Our sexuality has the capacity to create life-giving, multi-dimensional relationships. Our relationships are a source of insight into the Divine – God.

Bob Bartlett

Since 1970 Bob Bartlett has been working with young people as a youth minister, retreat director, teacher and counselor. Author of "Growing Toward Intimacy," he has spoken nationally to schools, youth rallies and parishes. He is married and has three grown children; the youngest, at age 19, works with adolescent issues such as sexuality and chemical dependency.

2-03 Consuming Faith: Spirituality & Economics in the New Testament and Today (Workshop Closed)

Many Christians sense that their economic choices should be integrated more fully with their spirituality. How does our faith influence how and what we buy? This session will look at some ways the New Testament has of picturing the integration of spirituality and economics. Particular attention will be given to the influence of corporate branding on young adult life today.

Dr. Tom Beaudoin

Dr. Tom Beaudoin is Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology at Boston College. He is author of "Consuming Faith" and "Virtual Faith: The Irreverent Spiritual Quest of Generation X," as well as many articles on theology and culture. Beginning in fall 2004, he will be Assistant Professor in the Religious Studies Department at Santa Clara University in California.

2-04 The New Evangelization: The Way of Integrity Through Church Crisis

Rev. Patrick Brennan

While Church leaders resist the necessary reforms, the only way to combat the malaise, anger and non-attendance symptomatic of a crisis is a renewed commitment on the part of parishes to evangelize active and inactive members, and the unchurched; to use the media more effectively; and to connect evangelization with justice. Practical models will be discussed.

2-05 Can’t Stop Praisin’  (Workshop Closed)

There is no reason why music in our liturgy does not move the body and soul to higher heights of praise, ministering to the assembly and to the choir as well. Make sure you have your shoutin’ shoes on for this workshop.

2-06 Re-Imagining the Eucharist: The Introductory Rites

In the belief that the arts affect people in the deepest places – the places of resistance and of embrace – we re-imagine the eucharistic liturgy through the lens of music, poetry, art and story. This workshop will deepen peoples’ understanding of the Introductory Rites. We will explore the connections between liturgical and life processions, the ways we seek and acclaim God’s mercy, the wealth of our baptismal imagery, and how singing "Glory to God" is enhanced by life moments that leave us in awe and praise.

2-07 Proclaiming the Gospel, Renewing the Church

There are two different "gospels" in the New Testament. The one preached by Jesus about God’s reign and the one preached by the early church about Jesus Christ. Both demanded conversion in the lives of individuals and institutions. Each "gospel" needs to be proclaimed as we seek to renew our church.

She has published several articles and authored a book on celebrating ritual with children.

2-09 More than Scripture: Preaching the Liturgy (Workshop Closed)

One of the great things about Roman Catholic preachers since Vatican II is that they preach the Scriptures. Unfortunately, one of their great problems is that they have a tendency to preach only the Scriptures. Yet, the official Church documents speak about preaching the sacred "texts," more than just the Lectionary. This workshop will explore the preaching event wider than imagined in the bishops’ 1982 document, "Fulfilled in Your Hearing." Such is the stuff of true liturgical preaching.

Edward Foley

2-10 Unleashing the Immense Power of Sunday Mass

Whether you are wondering what the latest trends in catechesis are or whether you are just looking for some creative ideas to use, we’re all trying to achieve the same thing – striving to make our young people disciples of Jesus. Participants in this session will identify creative, active and effective strategies by gleaning wisdom from key church documents related to catechesis ("The General Catechetical Directory," the bishops’ document "Renewing the Vision," and others) and applying them to faith formation efforts at our parishes and schools.

2-14 Mary: Family Guide For The Journey Home  (Workshop Closed)

Explore the challenge of Rosarium Virginis Mariae, Pope John Paul II’s 2002 apostolic letter. Consider how the rosary offers beads of transformation for family life – beads that suggest to parents ways to lead children from their center, to their Creator, through loving relationships with each other and in service of the Gospel. This session will provide reflection on the mysteries of the rosary and suggest "a new twist" to formulating "Aves" that instruct children in the ways of virtue. Mary will be our guide for this inward journey.

2-16 Mercy Singing in the Night

The Book of Samuel speaks of the mercy of David when he finds Saul who is trying to kill him. This is the beginning of mercy, its roots in Jewish history and the Scriptures. David imitates God who is kind and merciful and slow to anger. This is where we begin to practice the art of mercy – in justice, faithfulness and doing no harm to others even when we can. Many of the religions share this foundation of humanness and we must seek this way of being together on Earth.

2-17 SCC’s and the Rite of Initiation of Adults – The Community and the Conversion Journey

The primary minister of Christian initiation is the community of faith! Is it possible that Small Church Communities (SCCs) may enable the community to do its work? What potential exists within SCCs to apprentice a person into a Christian way of life? What would be the effect of this on both the SCC and the whole initiation process? This workshop will explore these questions as well as "Imaging the Initiation Process in Small Church Communities" – a new formation institute to examine the possibilities and challenges of such an endeavor.

Misbehaving children are discouraged children. They can’t seem to find a way to contribute or develop a sense of belonging. This workshop will include how to understand the child’s birth order and how to create a family atmosphere where all members contribute in developing a cooperative, enjoyable unit. Laughing and learning are a big part of this workshop, where specific techniques for encouragement will be discussed in detail.

2-20 Sacramental Formation: Opportunity for Adult Faith Formation

Many parishes and schools offer some formation for the parents of children preparing for first sacraments. This is a great opportunity to invite the parents to think beyond what the children need to their own faith as parents. This workshop gives both a theoretical foundation and practical suggestions for making sacramental formation of adults genuinely adult formation.

2-27 It’s a Sin to Bore a Kid: Radical Ministry for Radical Times  (Workshop Closed)

What do we do when we have a room full of students who want to know God, want to follow Jesus, want to love the church, but every experience they have is dull, boring, flat, predictable and uninteresting? First, we need to start with the adults who work with kids. Once we have adults who are passionate about God then the youth group better fasten their seat belts, because that youth group will become an alive, radical, life-changing place where the fragrance of Jesus permeates the church.
