I don't see the God Squad listed as Congress speakers. They are one of the highlights of the Congress. Please tell me that they will be at Congress 2002!

I am writing to let you know that I have enjoyed your Congress for the last 7 years and I hope to continue to come.

I am asking if you can please see if speakers like John O'Donahue, Liam Lawton can have tapes available. I enjoyed both of them but was disappointed that they did not have tapes.

Thank you

I've just read part of the "script" from a presentation at your Congress by Fr. Richard Sparks, entitled, "Catholic Sexual Morality: More Than 'Thou Shalt Not's." Most Catholic parents today live in the real world and are trying to raise children with a healthy attitude towards the beautiful (authoritative) Church teachings on sexuality. We don't want our kids to be overwhelmed by the "sexual diarrhea" of this culture. Unfortunately, Fr. Sparks appears to have a severe case of it. He's so obsessed with sexuality that it has affected his good judgment. I'm sorry that your congress chose to allow his presentation.

A Comment about the Nigerian Mass celebrated by Rev. Charles Ufomady & Msgr. Ray East, Saturday, February 17, 5:15 p.m. (Arena) / Need for some Apologetics

My wife and I and others we talked to who attended the Mass all feel that there was a very directed agenda of the homily. Although it WAS labeled a Nigerian Mass, it was foremost to be a Catholic Mass -- not a soapbox for the black cause in America. The homily was directed seemingly to blacks only, and Rev. Charles Ufomady who gave the homily (I'm sorry if I'm mistaken) stated, "this (homily) should have been one of the seminar classes" -- and he was most certainly right! This was a Catholic Mass not an agenda meeting. One other thing, some of us DID notice the omission of the Nicene Creed at this Mass as well! We and others were truly disappointed. This was our first time to the Congress and on the whole it was good, we had some very good speakers, some questionable, but very interesting and at times truly enlightening. In the future I would like to see more on apologetics, including exhibitors. I was extremely glad to see Ignatius Press had a booth there. It's speakers and publishers like this that are bringing "in" and brining "back" more people to the Catholic faith than you realize. They have a plethora of means to appeal to "RCIA" groups as well as Catholics who would like to know more about the Catholic faith in general, which in turn helps to teach others. Thanks for the hard work of putting the Congress together and making it happen.

Thank you and God bless you, Vince V.

I went to my first Congress and Youth Day this year. It was indescribable! The workshops were very informative and I learned a lot. The music was so awesome! Ceili Rain and Jesse Manibusan were so great! Please invite them back next year and for many years to come. Congress was a great experience for me and I thank you for giving people the opportunity to see the church in action. To see that many people gathered there just for God was amazing! Thank you so much!

Seems to me that entertainment supercedes, yes, even eclipses, the Eucharist as the main focus of your bizarre gathering. You probably won't accept this rebuke, because you have a hard heart.

I was not able to be at the LA Congress but would appreciate receiving a copy of the brochure each year when it comes out. Because of my role as director of the Office of Liturgy I need to attend several liturgy conferences each year and that uses up our money in the conference budget. But I am always interested in what the LA Congress has to offer and would be interested in keeping up with its program. Also, I just now listened to a friend's copy of the tape of the presentation "The New General Instruction on the Roman Missal: What's New? What's Old?" (#410) by Rev. Richard Fragomeni, which was given at this year's LA Congress. It is WONDERFUL. Is it still possible to order copies of this tape? I hope so.

Thank you, Maxine Kaiser

Congress attendees will automatically receive a Registration Guidebook for the following Congress event. If you missed last year, be sure to sign up to order a Guidebook.

This was the fifth Youth Day and Congress that I've been able to attend. After last year's fantastic congress, I thought to myself, "The weekend couldn't get better." This year's Youth Day and Congress was even more fantastic! Thank you for your efforts to help the Congress grow year after year. Our group was deeply moved by the strong witness of faith among the speakers and leaders at the Congress. Jesse Manibusan and Pam Stenzel challenged members of our group into action. The youth and adults could hardly wait to return to our home parish to share their messages with the others. The Spirit is moving the Congress in wonderful directions and our group looks forward to next year's Congress. It will be a wonderful opportunity to begin our journeys through Lent at the Congress. Kudos on having communion available under both species! Also, you may consider having more than two liturgies at the Youth Day since both were over crowded. Fr. Ray East or Fr. Glenn Murray appeal to teens. We'll see you in 2002! The peace of Christ to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

A couple of years ago I attended a workshop given by Dan Schutte, "Liturgical Planning with Cardboard Boxes" which I found informative and inspiring. I had hoped to attend another of his workshops this past year but he wasn't on your list. I would be more that interested if you could have him back again. His humble presence and moving music is something I'd enjoy again. Thank you.

Thanks for your interest in our annual Religious Education Congress. We will keep your request for Dan Schutte to give another presentation on Liturgical Planning in mind when planning future Congresses.

I am trying to reach Jan Pedrosa or anyone else who might be able to provide me some information on a beautiful art print that was on display during the RECongress in Anaheim two weeks ago. The print was "The Annunciation" by Henry O. Tannen (1898). This art made a real impression on me and I would love to obtain a copy...if only I knew where to look.

Thanks for your time, and God bless,

I attended Youth Day on Feb. 15th and had an awesome time. The first workshop that I went to was "My Music, Myself, My God" by Anna Scally. She was very good and helped me realize how secular music can be like a prayer. Very well done.

The only bad part of the day was when we were told to go to the overflow mass, because we were not in the Arena. As we went to the overflow mass, they said it was already full and so we had to squeeze into the back of the Arena. The mass was well done (from what I could see...)

The best part of the day by far was watching Jesse Manibusan. He is the best speaker I have seen! He kept us all entertained and involved. He joked around a lot, with his SPAM song ... both the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears version. But he also got across a very important lesson ... the need for uniting all God's people, no matter what we look like. By going through the audience, using specific people and saying "THAT'S MY FAMILY!", his message was definitely reached. He had upbeat songs, and also a reflective song about Mary. Jesse had the entire Arena singing and praising God's name--the energy was so high! WE NEED MORE JESSE! :)

The final rally was fairly well done. I liked how they had real people from So. California share their talents with everyone in a positive way. Being up in the front, I didn't notice any trouble with sound.

Youth Day was an awesome day, one I won't forget. I hope that next year will be even better ... more Jesse and more room in the Arena!

Thanks for everything! Amy

Thank you for another spectacular Congress this year. The best workshop I attended was Fr. Richard Rohr's "Quest for the Holy Grail." In terms of Youth Day this year Fr. Tony Ricard kept my teen group on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, I wish the same could be said for the closing event in the arena on Thursday. I think the guy running the soundboard may be deaf. We were sitting high up in the "nosebleed" section of the rafters, but I noticed many teens covering their ears for many of the performances. They seemed to like the "Total Eclipse of the Heart" skit, but otherwise the closing event was less than acceptable. I'm sure you realized this by the mass exodus (no pun intended) by the final song. The only group who could stay consistently on key was the Irish one. Blaring the volume at twice the normal level on exacerbated the problem. Please don't think I'm some crabby old guy as I attend rock concerts regularly. There needs to be a better screening process on both the sound system engineer & the "entertainment." Come on, this is L.A., there's no excuse for not being able to get decent talent up there. I think someone also needs to examine the process of who gets invited to have the honor of presenting to 10,000 plus Catholic teens. I'm all for giving an unknown band a chance (albeit one that can sing w/decent tone), but who's living in a closet that doesn't know the current state of Catholics in pop culture. Maybe it's a stretch to think L.A. could get U2 to headline like they did at the Pope's Youth Day in Rome last summer, but what about that "prettyboy" from MTV's real world series. He's probably the most recognizable hard-line Catholic that this teenage group is familiar with. I don't even know him but apparently he does a lot w/ Lifeteen. I'm not trying to lay consecutive bummers on you guys complaining about everything but the closing event was a bit of a debacle that shouldn't have been. The rest of the weekend was excellent though (soundboard tech included)

Best, Steve Braden

I have wanted to send a thank you for all of the wonderful workshops and liturgies that I have attended at Congress for the past 5 years. However, this year, at the Mass on Sunday morning, two of the readings were not in English, and there were no translations printed anywhere. Luckily, I had my missal with me, so I could understand what was being said. Many people couldn't, and the homily referred to the readings. They didn't understand what the bishop was talking about. Also, I enjoy singing along with the choirs, but at many of the masses, it became a concert for the choir, rather than a mass. The concerts are great at lunch, or in the evening, not during mass.

It is so wonderful to attend the Congress, starting with Youth Day throughout the rest of the weekend. I only have two comments: 1) Liturgy is good, but at communion it was very unorganized. Also, if you choose to do a reading in a different language, please pick the person that can read the language correctly. 2) The volunteers need to remember to keep friendly, I understand it's a very hard job, and some may be tired too, but ...be nice especially with young people when they're lost or need directions .... especially if it's their first time at Congress, or they may end up with hard feelings. Overall, thank you for all your hard work to make it happen. God bless your work

To all you very talented people who put together the RE Congress:

Many thanks for a job well done!  This morning I am looking at a 4-day weekend and at last have quiet time to reflect upon and integrate all the wonderful moments of this last weekend.  I prayed for you before the weekend and now I take a moment to say "Thank you."

From the moving liturgies, to the concerts, to the times of quiet prayer, and to the outstanding variety of talented speakers, my life and faith continue to be nurtured, healed, and challenged through the monumental task you undertake each year.

I thank you and truly appreciate all that you do!  It is truly an amazing gift you give to us each year. Thank you!

Sincerely,  Kathleen Stoeser

Congress was great this year, wonderful workshops. Fr. Tony Ricard was fantastic but next year (hopefully he will be back) please give him a larger room so we can all get in! Went to his first workshop but couldn't get in for the second because it was so full. And PLEASE have him say a Mass on Sat. evening again. His young adult Mass last year was one of the best and most inspirational I have been to in 15 years of the Congress. Also would be nice if the Convention Center could get their fire alarm system straight, didn't appreciate missing half of Christopher Walker's workshop. Keep him coming too by the way, he's great! All in all a great Congress, you have so many details to think about. Thanks for listening.

Dear Sr. Edith and the entire staff of the Religious Ed. office of L.A., I cannot resume my duties here at the parish without first dropping you all a note to say WOW, AWESOME AND THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH for all your work and dedication which made this Congress such an uplifting and wonderful experience of Church. Having lived in L.A. about 10 years ago and having had the experience of attending Congress during those years, I was truly excited when our Archdiocesan Director of R.E. provided me with the registration booklet. Being there was a form of homecoming for me. The Congress just keeps getting better and better. I encouraged two other DRE's to join me and off we flew to Anaheim. They had never been there and on our way back to Kentucky they could not stop talking about how wonderful the Congress was and how energized they felt. The liturgical dancing, music and multiculturalness of the masses and prayers truly helped us experience the Catholicism of our faith! The many options of speakers and topics was excellent. I could go on and on and on but I think you get the message--it was fantastic!!! I am already making plans to attend next year, God willing, and will start spreading the word to others here. By far, the L.A. Congress is the best of it's kind I have ever experienced! Please keep up the good work!! Know all of you share in my prayers in a special way this week.

In Christ's love I send you my heartfelt gratitude,

I love going to the different Masses at Congress. However, when there is already a Hispanic Mass scheduled on Saturday night I do not understand why the general Mass has to be bilingual. What has happened to the general Mass where environment was peaceful and spiritual? What is with the big productions? Some liturgical dancing is fine, but not some dancer who is trying to be the main focal point of the mass.

Please go back to the general Mass of simplicity. Sometimes more is not better.

General Mass at Congress needs to be that a general Mass not a production. On Saturday the general Mass at the Marriott Marquis room was anything but general. It was like a staged production. I do enjoy going to different Masses and seeing different ways that the Mass is celebrated. But there is a time when we each need to have a very simple and very spiritual Mass that does not have to be a production number. Please have a general Mass that is simple and spiritual next year not an over blown production by the cantor and dancers.

I just returned from 2001 Congress today. I had very good speakers on Youth day. I also had a very good experience on Friday and Saturday but was very disappointed on Sunday. My last class was "The Search for the Holy Grail." The class was not what it was titled to be. I went with the expectation that it would have information and education on the subject. It was going down the line of being a psychology class on men without fathers or brothers, how they do not know their masculine name, etc. I felt that the speaker was rambling without a direction. I left after 25 minutes. My son was with me and was also disappointed as he is a theology major. He expressed the same feelings to me.

Please be sure to have an accurate description of the classes being presented or a guideline for the speakers so that a class is not picked and wasted on something not of value to the person picking the workshops. This was my sixth year at Congress and I have had this problem with different workshops over the years.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

This year Congress was wonderful as always as I have always looked forward to coming each year as my wife and I do around February. But this year we drove from Riverside as we have in the past, parking was extremely bad this year for leaving the underground parking structure across from the Arena we sat with all the cars running for along time, one lady asked me how long we would have to smell the automobile fumes and I had no answer. I told her it was because of the numerous cars and only one way out causes a traffic jam of sorts. Maybe you or the Convention Center could address the problem of an orderly and efficient procedure to direct cars out of parking structure. If anyone else has had this problem I would as would the Congress Committee like to know and maybe with all those people at Congress somebody would have a great and inspiring idea to solve this annoyance. Praise God for such a spiritual and regenerating to my soul event it recharges my soul.

There are not enough workshops specifically for Early Childhood Religious Ed. Where is the old Board of Directors for ECE when you need them? Too much concentration within the archdiocese on Youth Ministry....Let's get back to the roots and deal with Early Childhood!!!

Reply

I agree that there were not enough workshops SPECIFICALLY for Early Childhood, ages 3, 4 & 5. Sharron Krull did an excellent job and her workshop was directed for pre school aged catechesis. John Platt was good, however his is more family oriented and not specifically for early childhood. I heard that Kathleen Chesto's talk, "Putting Skin on God" was great and influential to those who teach small children as well as children of all ages.

I am hopeful that the Early Childhood Advisory Board for the L.A. Archdiocese will be asked to return for Congress 2002. I have also made some recent contacts with other speakers who have pre-school experience behind them. They have to be recommended and approved by Cardinal Mahony. Keep early childhood in your prayers! Thanks.

Our parish has two youth who will be attending Youth Day. Someone told me that there are opportunities for the youth to sign up to volunteer (i.e., selling buttons, etc.) By doing so, they can attend the concerts/liturgies during the Congress without paying the registration fee. If this is the case, how do they sign up to volunteer?

Volunteer? Yes! We are always looking for volunteers. For Youth Day, you can check with Mike Norman in advance of Thursday, February 15. For Congress, you can contact Adrian Whitaker or the Volunteer Booth, located in the Prefunction Lobby of Hall A.

When will the list of taped presentations be available? I was hoping to select my presentations based upon whether or not they will be taped. Since I try to attend presentations that will not be taped and purchase tapes of presentations that are recorded, I would very much appreciate knowing if/when the list of taped presentations will be on line.

Looking forward to whatever presentations I attend.

Yes, we had a mishap of forms this year. The taping sessions are only now being compiled. The list will be available online soon.

Where Can I find information on Christiana Bursselman? I believe she was an advocate for the RCIA program. If there is no information on her where on the internet can I find information about the Mission and Goal of the RCIA Program?

Thank You,
Lester Collins

Thank you for including Dr. Daniel Smith-Christopher in Congress again this year. His insight into the Hebrew scriptures and their relevance for us today is refreshing.

Is it to late to register for Youth Day!? I can't seem to find the place to register via your web site. Everything is for the general Congress. Thanks, Diane

Registration for Youth Day is not available online. You can, however, download the Youth Day pages and Youth Day Registration Form from the Registration Guidebook and mail in the form.
