“Gathered and Sent: Saints, Prophets and Martyrs on a Mission”
The Gospels, the legacy of holy witnesses, and Vatican II speak of a Church that, at its best, gathers and sends. While this fundamental dimension of our faith tradition has struggled to see full expression in the local parish, the future of American Catholicism holds some exciting and promising prospects if we are willing to renew the possibilities of parish purpose and structure.

Bereft of her husband and two sons in a foreign country, Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, returns to Bethlehem in a time of famine. This illumination of the women’s inward leaning posture suggests feelings of mutual love and support as they look into the distance together.

Congress 2011 features The Saint John’s Bible -- the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine monastery since the invention of the printing press. This project of 1,150 calfskin pages was commissioned in 1998 by St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. Donald Jackson, the former longtime scribe to Queen Elizabeth’s Crown office at the House of Lords in London, and a team of 14 calligraphers and artists have completed six of seven volumes that make up The Saint John’s Bible. The last volume, Letters and Revelation will be completed in 2012. Stop by to see framed fine art reproductions from the first six volumes: Gospels and Acts, Psalms, Pentateuch, Prophets, Wisdom Books and the newest volume released in fall 2010, Historical Books.

A collaborative effort between a Protestant, Chris Hull (the artist), and a Catholic, John Hull (the writer), this ecumenically sensitive presentation explores the application of each “station” to the contemporary spiritual struggles of today’s men and women. In addition, artist Chris Hull has combined the use of shape, color and light to create each individual portrayal of Christ, which offers rich and varied possibilities for meditation.
