Youth Ministry E-VINE (March 13, 2020)
Dear Ministry Leaders,
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has released new guidelines to help direct us through the COVID-19 outbreak. Recognizing the grave cause of the current public health emergency, Archbishop José H. Gomez has dispensed all the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and all Catholics currently in the Archdiocese from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass for the weekends of March 14-15, March 21-22, and March 28-29.
The guidelines also state that "any gathering that is not essential to the celebration of our Catholic faith, such as retreats, penance services, parent meetings, youth groups, prayer groups, etc., should be cancelled. Any parish or school functions off parish property must be limited to 250 people, if not they should be rescheduled or cancelled". Please take time to read the guidelines, talk with your pastor and parish leadership team and make the necessary adjustments to your ministry.
As a result of these guidelines and those of the California state public health officials we are postponing the following events hosted by the Office of Religious Education Youth Ministry Division:
We will reschedule these events once we have updated guidelines from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and it is deemed safe for large group gatherings to take place.
Let us all come together and support one another as we work to protect the most vulnerable in our midst. We have the benefit of technology that can keep us connected to one another and to those we serve in ministry. Let's get creative on how we continue to bring Jesus - the Good News - to those we serve, especially those who are hurting, anxious and afraid during this time.
Our office is working to provide you with resources that you can use and/or make available for your young people and families. Please share with us ways you are shifting your ministry and finding new ways to walk with people while being mindful of the social distancing necessary to keep people safe and curb the transmission of this virus. Whatever you share with us - we will share with others so that together we can walk this journey calling upon the Holy Spirit to lead us.
Visit the Archdiocese's emergency preparedness webpage, lacatholics.org/emergency, for the most updated information and resources on how to limit the impact of the coronavirus. To receive ongoing text updates from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on this and other matters of importance to our local Church, please text "ADLA" to 84576.
Take care of yourself and your family. Go deep into prayer and stay close to Jesus. Do not hesitate to contact our office for any assistance you may need. You may find our contact information below. We will be in touch with resources and updated information as it is released.
You are all in our prayers!

Youth Ministry E-VINE (March 16, 2020)
Dear Ministry Leaders,
We know these days are filled with anxiety and uncertainty. In his letter dated March 13th, Archbishop Gomez reminds us that "our hope is in the Lord and we know that he will give us his grace and mercy in our time of need."
Here are the latest updates/guidelines for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles:
Sr. Rosalia states in the ORE Pastoral Response that "all Faith Formation Programs including, Religious Education, Confirmation, Sacramental Preparation Programs, Youth and Young Adult Ministry are to suspend gathering of people until further notice. We highly recommend you continue to accompany those to whom you minster in a more creative way."
We live in an amazing time in human history when the alternatives for in-person gatherings are actually pretty good. Platforms like Zoom, Facebook Live, Google Hangouts, Instagram Live, etc. allow us to get creative in the ways that we serve and minister to our young people and their families.

A Letter from Fr. Chris
Dear Catechists and Parish Catechetical Leaders in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles: “The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” - Romans 5:5b.
As you may have heard, I am transitioning from my role as Director of the Office of Religious Education (ORE) and returning to parish ministry. Archbishop Gomez has appointed me as the Administrator of St. John Chrysostom in Inglewood beginning 1 July 2019.
It has been a blessing and great pleasure to serve you as Director of the ORE over the last four years. Together with my time as an Adult Faith Coordinator, my 6 years in Catechesis have been very rewarding. I am grateful to have led a team committed to forming and accompanying our catechists and parish catechetical leaders throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I am proud to have collaborated on the vision of ORE’s large-scale events – the Religious Education Congress (RECongress), Regional Congresses, and City of Saints Teen Conference – providing many of our sisters and brothers unique opportunities to encounter Jesus Christ.
During my time as Director, our office also coordinated the Fifth Encuentro (V Encuentro) process, an initiative of the U.S. Bishops, which sought to form missionary disciples and energized thousands of our ministry leaders to reach out to the peripheries. Most recently, I have been working with the Regional Coordinators to develop and implement a training program for parish catechetical leaders called Luminary. It will make its pilot run beginning in August and I hope that many of you can take advantage of this wonderful offering.
In the course of the last few weeks, I have been working alongside the new Director of the ORE, Sr. Rosalia Meza, VDMF to ensure a smooth transition in ORE programs and events. Please join me in warmly welcoming her and praying for her as she assumes this leadership role and gets to know you better in the coming months. Know that you are in my prayers and I shall continue to support catechetical and evangelization efforts in the ADLA to the best of my ability. I shall leave you with this reflection on the Sacred Heart of Jesus from Pope Francis:
Peace,
Fr. Christopher Bazyouros
Director
Office of Religious Education

What's New This Year?
Changes to Registration
Youth Day is held Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Cost is $40 per participant with special discount pricing of $35 being extended through February 28, 2019. Groups can register online or by mail. When registering for Youth Day, groups will be asked to provide basic contact information for their group, such as parish/school name, group leader contact information, and the names of their chaperones. Groups will also need to select their preferred track.
This year, groups will NOT be asked to submit the names of young people. Instead, they will simply purchase a number of youth badges. In keeping with our policy of having 1 adult for every 10 young people, groups will be able to purchase up to 10 youth badges for every chaperone name they enter. This means a group that has 4 chaperones will be eligible to purchase up to 40 youth badges. A group with 6 chaperones will be eligible to purchase up to 60 youth badges. Please keep in mind that 2 chaperones will be required for the first group of 10 young people. For more information regarding Chaperone and Safe Environment Policies, please click here.
Groups will also NOT be asked to select their workshops in advance. All workshops will be selected at Youth Day.
Changes to Workshops
Each participant will experience two workshops at Youth Day. These workshops will be presented on a variety of topics by nationally acclaimed experts in the field of Youth Ministry.
Workshop rooms will be set with either theater seating (traditional), round tables or an open floor plan to allow for greater engagement.
Workshops will no longer be selected in advance. Instead, groups will be able to select workshops on site at Youth Day. This will allow young people the freedom to select workshops and speakers that best suit their needs and interests. Providing that young people are chaperoned at all times, larger groups are welcome to split their group into smaller groups that attend different workshops.
Room capacities will be larger to ensure that as many young people as possible are able to attend their preferred workshop. In the event that a room reaches capacity, groups will be directed to select another workshop.
Changes to Schedule
Youth Day will continue to feature a two-Track system. Both Tracks will experience a General Session in the Arena (which includes a keynote, liturgy, music and rally) as well as two workshops in the Convention Center.
Youth Day will now feature a staggered start and end time. Whether your group prefers to arrive early or beat the crowd and avoid traffic, we have an option for you.
TRACK 1 TRACK 2 TIME EVENT TIME EVENT 7:30 am Doors Open 7:30 am Doors Open 8:00 am Arena General Session 8:15 am Workshop 1 11:30 am Lunch 9:45 am Workshop 2 12:45 pm Workshop 1 10:45 am Lunch 2:15 pm Workshop 2 12:00 noon Arena General Session 3:15 pm Dismissal 3:30 pm Dismissal We have eliminated the Opening and Closing Sessions (previously held in Hall B), which allows for a greater passing period between Workshop 1 and Workshop 2.
Changes to Programming Locations
All Youth Day programming will take place in ACC North (the new Convention Center expansion) or in the Arena. This means that workshops, Sacred Space, Youth Day exhibits, and all other activities will be on either the first (Level 100) or second floor (Level 200) of ACC North.
Keeping all workshops in close proximity to one another will help ensure that your group will have time to select another workshop in the event that your preferred workshop selection is full. This will also allow groups the chance to focus more on the events of the day and worry less about having to move their group across the Convention Center.
Lunch options will continue to be accessible throughout the Convention Center and on the Grand Plaza.Youth Day Recruitment Day
