CONGRESS KEYNOTE ANNOUNCED
Mark
Shriver
Faith, Hope and Love in Action
Saturday, February 23, 8:30 am
In this Year of Faith,
Mark Shriver shares his father’s example to glean insights
about the durability of faith, a faith that demands
acts of hope and love. How did Sargent Shriver create
the Peace Corps, lead the “War on Poverty” — including
the development of its Head Start, Legal Services to
the Poor, Foster Grandparents, and VISTA programs —
expand Special Olympics around the globe, and still
attend Mass on a daily basis? How was he happily married
for 56 years, raising five kids all of whom loved him,
and always so joyful? Sharing the lessons he learned
in writing his New York Times best-selling memoir, “A
Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver,”
Mark Shriver will explore the source of his father’s
joy — his faith — and how it sustained him through life.
It is this faith that can help us all as we strive to
be better men and women.
Mark Shriver is
currently Senior Vice President for Save the Children’s
U.S. Programs and based in Washington, D.C. A former
Maryland state legislator, he created the Choice Program,
chaired the National Commission on Children and Disasters,
and is the author of the New York Times best-seller,
“A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver.”
Mark lives with his wife, Jeanne and their three children,
Molly, Tommy, and Emma in Maryland.
The session will be contextualized in the vision
proposed by the Year of Faith by Fr. Richard
Fragomeni, Associate Professor of Liturgy and
Homiletics and Chair of the Department of Word and
Worship at the Catholic Theological Union in
Chicago. You can find
the entire list of the 184 speakers for Congress 2013
on our Web site.
