What
is Congress?
Begun as in Institute in 1956, our first
event was held at Mount Carmel High
School on Hoover Street in Los Angeles.
There were some 500 teachers and
catechists in attendance at the two-day
conference, listening to speakers and
gaining experience from other teachers.

RECongress
2017
We
invite you to attend the 2017 Los
Angeles Religious Education Congress.
The theme for our event – "Embrace
Trust" / "¡Confía!"
–
is drawn from the readings of the
Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
(First Reading: Is. 49:14-15; Second
Reading: 1 Cor. 4:1-5;
Gospel: Matt. 6:24-34).
And our planning for RECongress 2017 is
fully underway. We are just now
beginning to add speakers, photos and
workshop information on our web site.
And this year, consider staying at
Congress. Soon we will announce hotels
with special rates for Congress
attendees!

Youth Day
Theme Reflection
The
theme for Youth Day 2017
–
"What Are You
Waiting For?"
–
is pulled from the readings of the day
(First Reading: Sir 5:1-8; Psalm: Ps 1:1-2,
3, 4, 6; Gospel: Mk 9:41-50). Read a reflection
on the Youth Day theme by teens
who are members of the Youth Day
Coordinating Team:
"The readings for Youth Day 2017 are about
conversion, a change of heart. That change
of heart is conveyed in each of the
readings. The first reading from Sirach
tells us to not delay, but rather turn to
Jesus before it is too late. The Gospel from
Mark gives us a look at what to expect if we
hesitate or put off turning to the Lord, or
if we lead others astray. ... So why wait to
convert and change our ways? The time is
now! This year’s theme is a question: 'What
are you waiting for?' "

RECongress 2017 Theme: "Embrace Trust"
Fr.
Christopher Bazyouros, Director for the Office of
Religious Education, offers his reflection
on this year's Congress theme:
“...While I was in Poland for World Youth
Day I had the opportunity to visit a museum
dedicated to St. John Paul II. In one of the
rooms was a large boat (like one that Peter
and his brother may have used) with the
words: “Put out into the deep” (Lk 5:4). Out
of darkness, doubt and fear we are called to
Embrace Trust! I invite you all to join us
at the Religious Education Congress in
Anaheim and open your heart to this call."

Congress Speakers Added
Over the three days, Congress 2017 will offer
over 300 workshops presented by more than
200 speakers. Topics range from personal
growth to music to spiritual topics — in
English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Each
Emailing we spotlight one of our speakers:
Sr.
Edith Prendergast, RSC
Sr. Edith Prendergast, a Religious Sister
of Charity, is former Director of the Office
of Religious Education in the Los Angeles
Archdiocese. She is a frequent speaker both
locally and nationally and has written and
contributed to several articles on
spirituality and catechesis. Sr. Prendergast
is author of the book “Grace Abounds: A Call
to Awaken and Renew Your Faith.” In 2015,
she received the "Evangeli Guadium – Joy of
the Gospel” award from St. John’s Seminary
in Camarillo, Calif., and in 2016, she was
awarded the "Religious Service Angel Award"
from the Catholic Association of Latino
Leaders.
“Still We
Rise”: Living with Trust in Seasons of Dark
and Light
In a world of uncertainty, we are called
more than ever to trust in the outrageous
and steadfast Love of God, who accompanies
us on the Way. Drawing wisdom from
Scripture, poetry and stories of courage, we
are strengthened to trace fresh paths toward
personal and communal transformation. This
means building trusting relationships.
Likewise, it means walking in the footprints
of Jesus who awakened his followers to a new
vision, who endured struggle and yet in the
process shone light in the darkness. We will
explore both the challenges and hopes of
awakening hearts to the gift of the
transforming power of God's presence in our
lives and in the world.

Spotlight: Sacred Space
Thursday through Sunday – Convention 304
On the third floor at Congress,
Sacred Space provides a quiet place to pray,
participate in the sacrament of
reconciliation and walk a labyrinth. Last year, participants could pray
the Stations of the Cross, focusing on the
victims of human trafficking
–
our
modern-day slavery happening all around us,
often undetected – along with
a prayer reflection called "Garden of
Dreams – A Via Crucis on Human Trafficking."

JIM WALLIS
“How Might Spiritual Revival Cause Change?”
From Ireland’s Bono to Britain's Gordon
Brown to a new global generation, poverty is
focusing and energizing the faith of many
around the world and in the United States.
For the first time in history we have the
information, knowledge, technology and
resources to bring the worst of global
poverty virtually to an end. What we don’t
have is the moral and political will to do
so. How might spiritual revival cause such
social change?
